Okay, so Bowie himself has "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes." There's also Peter Schilling's "Major Tom (Coming Home)," a classic piece of synthpop regardless of what the Bowie purists might say. And You Shriek has a song called "Major Tom (Heard You Calling)" on their last album.

Is that it? Are there other Major Toms floating around?

Well, okay. I was more looking for other songs... 8)

I've got this mix CD idea churning in my head-- about lost astronauts and the like. "Ashes to Ashes" and that kind of thing, and other lost technology things. "The Belldog," "One Of Our Submarines," and probably other songs I'm not remembering at the moment... Lots of "people doomed by their own desire to explore and their technology" things.

Spacy today. Whee.

"...ashes to ashes, funk to funky
we know Major Tom's a junkie..."

Thank you for this earworm.

They used the lyrics to Major Tom as the bgeining dialgue for the most recent episode of The Venture Brothers. It was very cool. They even had a character named Action Man (he later married Major Tom's wife).

Ha. Neat.

Is that, um... available in a format viewable on a computer somewhere?

Try searching on some P2P software. I found 3 episodes via Soulseek, I think my roommate found them all on bit torrent.
I think new episodes are on Saturday nights on Cartoon Network, although since TiVo grabs them I'm not positive about that.

As an aside the theme for the show was done by JG Thirwell of Foetus fame.

I have a cover of Shilling's Major Tom done by the generics, the a cappella group from U Maryland, circa 1996.
