A month or so ago, not long after my last lengthy whine about creativity and "wah wah, I'm so lame," I finally decided to drop the cash and acquire a decent MIDI sequencing and audio program. So, I bought Logic Express, thinking that at $150, it was minimally painful if I decided it wasn't going to work for me.
It's VASTLY complex. Logic Express is the stripped-down student edition of Logic Pro (for stripped-down students. I made sure I wasn't wearing pants), and it's still incredibly complicated. I could go into it, but really, it's probably better glossed over.
After a couple of hours of messing around, I managed to record something. It's got audio stuff, MIDI stuff, software synths and effects, and basically all the things I wanted to do with this here laptop and music software. It's got the A-station, DX100, Buzzer2, Steinberg's Attack! VST drum machine, and the stereo delay that came with Logic. It was recorded using a very nice Keystation 61ES and M-Audio FireWire Audiophile audio interface. That's all the stuff I'd hoped I'd be able to do and all the stuff I'd hoped to be able to use (aside from the MKS-30, which appears to have stopped working again).
So, without further ado, here you go. A 40-second MP3 (about 700k), entitled Oh Look, I'm Orbital.
Not the single most original piece in the world, but I figured as long as Orbital aren't being Orbital any more, I might as well give it a shot.
