Bad week at WPI. First, a kid was run over on the corner of Park and Institute, and now Pauline LaMarche has died.

From: "Schachterle, Lance"

On behalf of the faculty of the Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and
Science, I wish, with regret, to inform the WPI community of the death of
Pauline Lamarche at 4 A.M. today. As some of you know, Pauline was diagnosed
with a rare and untreatable form of cancer some months ago.

Pauline Lamarche was the senior member of the Academy community. She was the
first professional hire in the program, and joined the teaching staff as a
computer science teacher in 1993. She devoted her enormous energy in the
early years of the Academy to shaping the team- and project-based program
that distinguishes the junior year of study. In 2000 she become full-time
principal, a position she held until her retirement in 2002. As teacher and
principal, she worked tirelessly to support the academic and social programs
of the Academy. She was friend and advisor to hundreds of Academy students,
and she supported with great energy and enthusiasm the mission of the Academy
and its teachers for over a decade.

When the family has made arrangements for a memorial service, I will let the
community know.

Pauline is dead?

...you know I was upset when she drove Vetter and Carol Seeglitz and me out of the Academy but that sucks.

Frankly, I'm surprised that pedestrians aren't hit by cars every day at the corner of Park and Institute...

Me too. It's a nasty one, with cars coming from all directions, hills, Park Ave speeders, and people blasting down the hills at top speed.

WPI's In Memoriam site has information and photos of both (ok, well Pauline's photo is coming shortly).

The student who was hit and killed Monday was jogging when he apparently stepped out in front of an oncoming truck. He was hit, knocked to the ground, got up, stumbled to the curb, and collapsed. He died about a half hour later at the hospital (not sure which one, as the T&G and his obituary report two different ones). It's all very sad and many around here are shocked.

If deaths come in threes, who's next? :(

Oh wow. I knew Pauline pretty well my freshman year, when I helped her run a conference. Damn.

Death Watch...?

I was kind of thinking the same thing, but was afraid to mention it for fear of Murphy's Law.
