I decided to order takeout sushi last night, from Sakura Tokyo.

I called up and ordered, from memory, my usual pile of stuff (enough for two people)-- 4 orders of avacado maki, 2 tamago, 2 inari, and an order of ume shiso maki for good measure. The order-takin' guy seemed to handle it all okay.

When I got there, the woman who was there to greet me and give me my food said, "Ah, you have an old menu, yes?"

"Uh, I don't have a menu at all. That's what I usually order," I said.

"Well! We have changed our menu! Some things aren't on the menu any more! Don't worry, we made it for you anyway. We still make it, but it's not on the menu."

She started messing with the computer, finishing up my order, and I picked up a new menu and glanced through it.

With growing horror, I realized that my worst fears were realized. I scanned the list of maki, and then looked through it closely. Surely I was mistaken. Could it be true? Line by line, maki by maki, I searched, but in vain. There was no other conclusion I could reach.

Avacado maki is no longer on the menu.

With despair in my heart, I made my way home with what may be the last avacado maki ever. EVER. I devoured them, savoring every bite, knowing that it could be the last ever feast of avacado maki from Sakura Tokyo. Sure, I could go to Fugakyu, but it's so far away. If I just feel like some cheap veggie sushi in the evening, it's kind of a haul. My one-time favorite cheap sushi place has abandoned me.

Why would they drop avacado maki? Did I not order it enough? It's been a few weeks, but still! Surely I was not the sole eater of avacado maki in Worcester! I know Jer ordered some! And I ordered enough for three or four people every time I went! It's my favorite thing! EVER! And now, now I am lost without my cheap avacado maki.

Pardon me while I weep.

*lol* - ok, I shouldn't laugh. There's nothing worse than somewhere changing a menu and in the process removing your favourite thing from it.

Beg them to put it back on there, tell them it's the main reason you keep coming back. I've tried that, and it worked at one place. At the very least they may well say "Tell you what, we'll keep making them for you if you give us some notice".

That's stupid. Why discontinue it. It's not like an avocado maki contains any ingredients they wouldn't already stock for other rolls (did they keep California rolls?)

And on that note, any way you could just order, say, a California roll minus the crab and cucumbers? :)

Thank you for posting this

This entry just reminded me that *we* bought avocados last week for a Cobb salad. We used one, but the other still needed time to ripen.

It's good now.

YES! They got rid of Ume Shiso too, my ABSOLUTE favorite!!!! No one carries it anymore, and last time, they wouldn't even make it for me... I think it had something to do with the person I was with and hir clothing choice though. ::sigh::
Now I'm veggie, and I really can't get any of my old favorites. THey are all fish or discontinued.

My wife always gets an ume shiso handroll as her dessert. She is not happy when she's somewhere they don't make them.

We also love ankimo (monkfish liver), but that's even rarer.

huh. i think that they had ume shiso last night, unless i'm thinking of something else. but i didn't check the menu to see if it's still on there or not...

that'd be funny (but in a sad, annoying way) if they brought ume shiso back, and dropped avocado.

They made them for me, but don't appear to have them on the menu any more.

"We still make it, but it's not on the menu."

I'd think this means that you're still OK for getting the stuff - as others have said, they still *have* avocados, after all.

Lots of non-big-chain restaurants have items that they'll make which they don't advertise.

[And you can have all of my avocado maki. Yick.]

I concur, except in that some medium-chain restaurants also do this. Bertucci's used to carry a dish (Scallops al Forno, maybe?) of which [livejournal.com profile] tpau was extremely fond, and they have continued making it upon request for the last 3 years or so since they stopped listing it. You may start to recognize you as The Guy Who Orders Avocado Maki, but that's not really a problem per se.

i've done that sorta thing at several places. as long as they still carry the ingredients and are willing to make it, why the heck not. ordering off-menu is fun!

Sure, and I have. And making sushi is a mighty effort which lends itself to having parties centered around making sushi, rather than just, say, deciding you'd like some avacado maki and eating it... So I sure wasn't going to make rice, wait for it to cool, mix in the special vinegar, cut up avacado, and so on at 9:00 last night after driving back from Cambridge...

Not that it's not fun! But take-out exists for a reason. 8)

I have eaten avocado maki in Worcester, but not at Sakura Tokyo, so you can blame me.

On the other hand, Osaka has it!!

(opposite end of town but hey ... unless Osaka is technically in Shrewsbury... oh well)

Avocado maki, tamago, edamame and miso soup is my favorite meal at Japanese restaurants. When I go to a new place and they don't have avocado maki, I don't go again.

Damn, now I'm hungry.

Yeah, but my experience with Osaka was not good, and I never felt inclined to return. Their food was old and not fresh, and their tables were very cramped if you didn't want it cooked at the table. They were obviously set up entirely for cooking-table people and didn't quiet know how to deal with people who just wanted sushi. Perhaps that's changed, but the first time I was there wasn't impressive enough to make me want to return...

I've had a few good experiences at Osaka. They know how to deal with people who only want sushi when they sit at the sushi bar. This obviously won't work if you go in a large group, but for groups of up to four or so, its nice.

My first experience with Osaka was pretty funny. A friend and I went in for a snack in the middle of the afternoon the first week they were open. We were the only customers in the place. The stereo was playing some kind of bizarre Japanese interpretation of country western music. The hostess kept apologizing and offering to change it until we finally convinced her we liked it.

Yes it's technically in Shrewsbury. Sorry, this is a little peeve of mine, I'm not taking it out on you. See when you cross that lake, it's Shrewsbury, not Worcester. White City is all Shrewsbury. Oh and Spag's, definitely Shrewsbury. (Sick of WPI people who aren't from the area thinking half of Shrewsbury is Worcester) (I hope this post doesn't sound mean).

You know, given how much of "Boston" isn't, I think y'all have no room to complain. Hell, some parts *I* don't even know if they're technically Boston or not - Allston (which according to some doesn't exist at all anyway)? Charlestown? I'm pretty sure Brighton isn't, but not 100%. . .

Charlestown is its own, but Allston and Brighton are neighborhoods in Boston.

oh, and I also mourn the loss of the Avacado Maki :(

I hate to heap more sorrow on your already heavy heart, but avocado maki is technically not traditionally Japanese at all. Per [livejournal.com profile] _sanctimonious_, avocadoes are not indigenous to Japan, but instead originated in California rolls - those crazy Californians used them in place of raw fish. So, Sakura Tokyo isn't exactly pissing on ancient Japanese traditions by not offering avocado maki anymore. I do remain sorry for your loss, though.

um, I went there like 2 weeks ago and had avocado maki. they didn't say word one to me about it. I even checked it off on the checklist thingy. can't say as I noted whether it was on the menu or not, although I did note that the menu had changed.

I say let's just keep ordering it, regardless of whether it's on the menu.
