Reminds me of when the BBC tried to export Eastenders to the US and had to produce a small book of UK slang words so that watchers in the US wouldn't get confused by people saying things like "just a packet of fags" or similar.
one of my exes was a brit in the us. he told someone at a pharmacy he was all bunged up and she sent him to stool looseners. not exactly what he meant, i gather.
