Okay, so, here's the deal with that.

For the past four years or so, I have gone to Intercon and dominated the auction. It started off as a sort of raffle ticket-buying contest with [livejournal.com profile] kviri originally, I think. Each of us would sneak back when the other wasn't looking and acquire more and more tickets, with the intent of getting all the good stuff and making fun of the other. The first year, he and I each had somewhere around 100 tickets each. Most people had one or two, and a few others had 20 or so. He and I got most of the stuff, although not as much as you might suspect.

The next year, I decided that since I had an income and all, I might as well support the con this way intentionally, so I just bought a bunch of tickets. I sat in the front row and grinning maniacally as they drew the tickets. Sure enough, I won a decent number of prizes.

The third year, I was warned ahead of time by, I believe, [livejournal.com profile] jducoeur that people might get resentful, and making sure I was okay with public mockery in order to dull the sting of seeing one person win everything. I was all ready to be tied up at the front of the room and stuff, except that even though I had something like 200 tickets in hand, I won... nothing! It was very amusing.

Last year, I had something like 350 or 400 tickets. It was a truly prodigious amount. It took FOREVER to write my name on the back of them all. I won many neat things, and gave some of them to people who wanted them more, and swapped them with people if they had things I wanted more, and picked up a bunch of games using gift certificates and things.

So this year it seems that people were chanting "Not Josh! Not Josh!" during the auction. I am very amused, and I'm sorry I missed it. I hope people enjoy the prizes, which are, I must note, RIGHTFULLY MINE!!!!!!!

Thus, to "Josh the auction": buying tons and tons of raffle tickets and sitting up front grinning in a predatory fashion at the prize table. Winning is not implied, as shown by year three.

Thass funny--at Lunacon, the chant is "Kill Seth!" (Breidbart), for much the same reason and in much the same spirit.

I think there was a sign up advertising raffle tickets that said something like "Josh isn't here so you might even win something!"

The sign was my fault. We were making up various signs at packet stuffing and we got to the raffle signs and one of us (I forget who) made the joke so it went on one of several signs. Those in the know I think appreciated the joke. A few people new to the convention asked about it and at least I pointed out a few times that despite the quantity he purchased, it only seemed like [livejournal.com profile] solipsistnation won everything.

(And, yes, raffle ticket sales are a source of income for the convention, so we were pushing them harder this year. And, fortunately, we had an excellent haul of prizes this year, too.)

This year, the distribution of prizes was broader. I think it was split this year as to whether [livejournal.com profile] laurion or [livejournal.com profile] laura47 was the "new Josh".

"Pulling a Josh"

We were chanting "Not Chad" in my section. He totally "pulled a Josh" at Intercon Gazebo and dominated the auction. He won so much that we started chanting "Not Chad!" as they pulled the tickets, and sometime they just threw away his ticket when he won. (It was a small con, only about 100 people, and not many people bought raffle tickets.) When he started winning a bunch this year, some of us who'd been at Gazebo restarted the chant.

They may have been chanting "Not Josh" somewhere else though. There was a sign up in the Con Suite listing reasons to buy raffle tickets, and one of them was "Josh isn't here! You might actually win!".

When I hear early in the weekend that Chad wasn't going to buy any tickets, I had plans to buy tickets in both his and your name, but when he bought a bunch I just got tickets for myself. I heard a rumor that tickets were in fact purchased in your name. You're an institution.

I made almost as much of a killing as Chad did. He got a $50 gift certificate, but I got a free membership for Intercon Mid-Atlantic (currently worth $30), a T-shirt, some book, and the one item at the auction that i wanted above all else, a copy of "Stoner Fluux" (which i hadn't heard of until I moved the prizes down). I can't believe how well I did. I spent only $25, and had 37 raffle tickets, and I made a *profit* on the raffle. I currently think the Intercin raffle is the coolest thing ever. If I still have an income come next year I am totally "pulling a Josh". You'll have to show up and try to assert your dominance. :)

And I will enjoy 'your' prizes, yes I will...

It said "Josh isn't here! You could win!".

There were a couple of other people that got at least three prizes. (I ended up with three odd games.)

I always thought "pulling a josh" had a totally different meaning than something to do with an auction..

I have this vague memory of you being verbed back in Germany before we were aware one could do such a thing...

At the Halloween Contra Dance around here there is this guy who puts an insane amount of time into his costuming. He won the "best Costume" award so many years in a row that they just started calling it "the Ron Award". The first year I went to the Halloween Contra he was going to be out of town, and they were publicizing the contra as anyone having a chance to win "the Ron Award." Seeing his 8 ft ant or 10 ft skeleton the next two years really helped me see WHY he always wins.
