Okay, so they (he) played Boston at right about the same time as I am at the height of the new obsession. Ideal! So off we went to see the show.

They played TT The Bear's Place in Cambridge. Two openers, Choo Choo La Rouge and Manischevitz. The first was kind of neat, if a little generic. The second was mostly interesting for their cover of "King's Lead Hat" and their strange, detached guitar player, an Asian fellow who stood far to one side and played complex and interesting parts with a look of utter concentration. Overall, though, too much opener before the main act.

John Darnielle gets into what he's playing more than almost anyone I've ever seen. He writhes and mouths strange harmonies over his guitar. You can hear him singing even when his mouth is away from the microphone, high and wordless. He can hardly stay on his chair. Peter, the bass player, joins in on bass that swings between subtle and bold with an astonishing ease. He tickles the strings or pounds them as the song requires, as Darnielle strums and plucks, pickless, at his own guitar.

The songs? If you like them, the live show is even better than the recordings. I recommend them. See them live. Good show.
