them's my kids!
Dec. 9th, 2003 07:09 pmThis is the club I advise, although they really don't need any guidance:
"The players' goal is to balance the budget with the minimum number of negative events in the state," said Worcester Polytechnic senior Michael Gesner, lead developer of "MassBalance." "You want to be able to solve the budget problem by really understanding what each of the budget items was about, and realize that it's a series of trade-offs."
Whoo! Here's the game, too.

Date: 2003-12-09 05:36 pm (UTC)Youse kids are cool!
This seems like it would be perfect for some kids just a few years younger than them who are taking a government elective and/or a course on practical applications in math.
hm, I think I might know some of those...

It's all this Mike Gesner's thing. He's DRIVEN. Like, frighteningly so. And a nice guy, which helps.

Date: 2003-12-10 06:27 am (UTC)So, as an advisor, do you go to meetings at all, or just sign pieces of paper? I'm debating volunteering for being one to help one of the cool new orgs that's starting up (if I can pick one... there seem to be a bunch now), but I don't have a lot of free time.

Date: 2003-12-10 06:31 am (UTC)I go to meetings when I have time and when something neat is happening, like the talk by the Harmonix (makers of Frequency and Amplitude) folks.
Otherwise, I don't have to do much-- approve the budget ("Duh, looks okay to me." *sign*) and sign the anti-hazing thingy.

Date: 2003-12-10 06:32 am (UTC)Oh, and if they need rooms, I may have to help them get them, but they've finally figured out that they need to reserve things in advance, so I don't have to call up plant services and beg them to do stuff on really short notice any more.
