Oooh, this is a good one. A lot smoother than the younger shirazzes (or shirazi?), but still distinctively spicy. Very rich and flavorful, with hints of tannins, although nowhere near overwhelmingly so. A nice lingering finish, too.

Last week I picked up five or six bottles of stuff I hadn't tried before, mostly from the Australian section-- I pretty much went by what had a Wine Spectator number on the label on the shelf. This was one of the two older, higher-rated wines I picked. The other, a McGuigan Bin 2000 shiraz, I may save for a slightly more special occasion than just a fairly standard dinner...

Recommended. In fact, highly recommended. Yum.

Edit:

With tomato sauce (especially homemade canned sauce, yum!), it becomes sweeter and the berrylike flavors come to the forefront. This is the best shiraz we've had, especially for this kind of meal. Whoo, yeah.

Hmm, now i'm wondering if that's the shiraz i saw at Costco today that i almost picked up. Instead i went on a white wine run...

tea also has tannins, as we were enthusiastically informed by a mad London cab driver.

but I suspect you also wouldn't drink that...

Well, that's what he was drinking it for. :) We were treated to a lengthy rant about how he smoked constantly but it never did him any harm because of all the tea he drank having coated his insides with thick, red tannins. Said rant was interspersed with a nasty, hacking cough of course.

I cannot fault you for liking strong reds. How about reviewing reviewing some merlots and cabernets? A wine snob cannot live on shiraz alone.

hmm. "shiraz" is an Arabic word, so I guess the plural would be... shiraziin? Arabic plurals are a pain in the arse. Shame it isn't Hebrew. "shirazim" has a nice ring to it. :)

Actually, it's Persian, not Arabic :)

I suppose that should have occurred to me, given that the cities in that area are so old, but it didn't.
