When feeling clever for backing up your hard drive before wiping it and installing an OS upgrade, make sure you remember that the backup software needs a license key to actually restore those files, and that that license key is on a piece of paper at home somewhere, not at work, where you're actually doing the backing-up and upgrading.

I think that restoring files is not the good time for software to require a license key. Backup is the good time to require a license key.
