I've been playing Max Payne 2 today. It's exactly what I'd hoped-- more of the same, but prettier. They've got a handle on this kind of storytelling, and have made the engine much more reactive. Lots of active objects in the game-- push over piles of boxes, and so on. I even found one room that seemed to exist mostly to show off the physics engine, which included lots of little things to play with and throw around. Very neat.

Anyway, this got me thinking-- a while back, [livejournal.com profile] soleta asked for suggestions for slash fiction, but she seemed to utterly ignore my suggestion of a Max Payne/Hermione Granger fic. Thus, I am forced to plot out my own.

Here's the story.

The kids from Hogwarts are on a field trip to the US. New York City, in fact, where they will be visiting another school of wizardry. While making their way throughout the city, they stop to do a bit of sightseeing and so on. While they're poking around, they hear lots of sirens and shooting, and the building they're in is evacuated. It seems some maniac is shooting up the upper floors, and they want to make sure the kids are safe.

Hermione, unfortunately, was rather distracted when they cleared out the building-- she was in the bathroom and reading something, and didn't even notice the commotion. All she knows is that she comes out and looks around for her friends, but the building is entirely empty. Being curious, she begins to poke around, and comes across a sorely-wounded Max Payne, searching for painkillers and hiding in an office waiting for mobsters to burst through the door.

Thinking back to her classwork, she uses a magic spell to heal his bullet wounds, and to guide them, invisible, past the gangsters searching for Payne. This would be the end of it, but her class is gone, and she's not sure where to find them, so Max takes her to a safehouse and begins to help find the people she was supposed to be meeting. While there, their eyes meet, and they realize that they were thrown together by fate, and although they know that fate will once again tear them apart, they share the kind of love only a small overeducated British wizardling and a battlescarred mass murderer hopped up on painkillers could ever know.

Once found, Hermione returns to her classmates, with vague tales for them of helping a terribly misunderstood man come to terms with the memory of his murdered wife. The others are dubious, but she just smiles and stares off into space, remembering his arms around her and his eyes, deep pools of regret and sadness, and the way his hands smelled of gunpowder and blood, so calloused and rough, but so gentle on her skin...

What do you think, sirs?

That is most likely the only Harry Potter based fan fic I will ever read.

I think you're a sick, sick fuck. It obviously should have been Payne and Weasley hooking up...
