You know I was just reading about the Steyr ACR which used 5.6mm fleschette jacketed in a sabot. The high speed of the fleschette is enough to give it "ray gun" like performance, meaning you needn't lead your target. It also had excellent armor piercing capabilites. Unfortunatly, in trials it didn't double the performance of the M16 so the project was abandoned :(
Another beautiful technicaly advance, but abandoned, weapon is the HK G11. It fires 4.7mm caseless ammunition. In full auto it has a modest fire rate of 600 rpm, but in tri-burst mode the rate increases to 2000 rpm. Unfortunately NATO politics deep sixed the project just prior to production.
