Tonight we shared a bottle of the Chateau St. Jean 2000 Fume Blanc (Russian River Valley).
Unlike the last fume blanc we had, this one does not immediately assault the senses with a huge overload of grapefruit doom. It's still there, but it's a note, and not an overwhelming presence. This is a really good wine for spicy (and possibly sweet) savory foods-- in fact,
jehanna made the same Moroccan stew business as last time, except with more apricot bits, so it had little bursts of that leathery sweetness that makes dried apricots so appealing.
The wine, which is dry and only a little acidic-- again, unlike the last one-- is... Well, shoot, I'm not sure how to get all wine-snobby about it. It's probably going to become my baseline for a good fume blanc, at least until I've tried more than two. I'd certainly pick this up again, even at the somewhat startling $18.00 for the bottle. It's smooth and tasty, a little sweet, with a long citrusy (but not jarring or overly acidic) finish.
I'm getting pleasantly bleary now, so I'm going to go back to reading. Suffice to say, this is a good one, and recommended for dinners with spicy vegetarian food. Not so hot with meat or tomato sauces or whatever, but if that's what you're having for dinner, you probably already know what you want to drink with it.
I seem to recall Wine Spectator giving this one a high 80's or low 90's score (probably high 80's, though).
