old techno
Oct. 15th, 2003 04:18 pmWhenever I list to electronic music from, oh... about 1993-1998, I become extraordinarily nostalgic.
I'm talking about the days when stuff had just gotten cheap enough and analog was juuuust coming back into style and everyone was doing long noodly semi-ambient things. Ten minutes of arpeggiations and swoops and an 808 beat with some little sampled thumpy things? Mmm, yeah.
My favorite CD for this kind of thing is a compilation called "United State of Ambience II." It's got some really beautiful tracks-- "Deus" by Electric Skychurch, and "Introspection Part 1" by somebody called Stryke both stand out as nice smooth chill-out tunes. The rest of the CD doesn't stand out quite as much, but since the first few tracks will put you out, you may not notice.
Makes me wish for... well, stuff I already have. I guess, more for the state of mind that let me get into that sort of trance state in the first place. The good days of Many Small Functions. The 202, before I got bored of it. (Does my brother still have it? Hm.)
Eh. Not sure if this is going anywhere. Maybe no. No great insight, but if you like this kind of thing and you see the "United State of Ambience II" compilation show up in a used-record bin, pick it up. It's pretty good.
