This is the project I've been semi-secretly working on.

For people who like numbers and models, it's a Shuttle SN45G with an Athlon XP 3000+ (2.1GHz) CPU. It's got a 400MHz CPU bus and a 400MHz memory bus. It's got 1GB PC3200 RAM. It's got a 120GB hard disk and some kind of generic DVD-ROM drive. It's also got a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB 8xAGP card and a wireless card. I then take all this crap and run Windows XP on it, so I can play video games. And, uh, that's it. Should play Half-Life 2 and Thief III and all those real good, once they ship.

To paraphrase: "I wish I could say this was the geekiest thing I'd done. Today."

What kind of dork buys a Shuttle case and mods it?

Clearly a dork who doesn't procrastinate, because I haven't gotten around to modding mine yet...

I have a spare window the right size (although the edges are pretty ugly, but the gasket covers that) if you don't feel like cutting your own.

I will also happily give you the heinous chemicals required to paint aluminum if you feel like it, 'cause, damn, I don't want them around the house.

I wasn't aware that "semi-secretly" connoted "look, everybody! I'm doing this!" - I must have been using the root word entirely wrong all these years. a tragic blunder for a professional writer to make... :)

Well, I never came out and said it here, although I did on IRC...

Don't they come in that color?

If I was gonna paint a case, I'd go for something crazy.

Hey, is that power switch standard? Looks easy to find, tho I suppose it could be tripped accidentally pretty easy.

(you know, right when you're killing me in hl2!)

The actual power switch is the larger of the two buttons on the front, and it's a software button, really.

The big switch on the back turns the lights on and off. 8)

As a disgruntled EE, I offer you this advice: never trust a software button. If it don't need an occasional cleaning, it ain't a switch, I reckon.

Does the window fuck up the faradaycageness that you want in order to meet the FCC emissions requirements, etc?

I dunno, actually.

They seem to be no longer cracking down on that, considering the number of plexiglas or otherwise wide-open cases I've seen around.

I was under the impression that if you sell a computer, it has to meet the FCC requirements. If you sell a case, there's no way to test that by itself for whether it meets the FCC requirements, and so you don't have to do that testing to sell just a case.

Having this as the last comment just made this whole thing surreal.

That'd be an interesting fetish - case-modding.
