We went and saw Moon today. It was a pretty fantastic film. It's the kind of thing that doesn't get made as much since Star Wars came along and made pure big-screen space opera incredibly popular and set the state of SF films back to about the 30's plot-wise.

It's an introspective, creepy, occasionally funny, and very human film. It heads in the same direction as Allan Steele's near-future SF-- it's about a guy on the moon doing a job, and that's pretty much it. No saving the universe or the world or even the moon, just one man and what he does and why. It's understated and even fairly subtle, which is also kind of a relief after decades of giant explosions and idiot plots and borrowed mythology.

I know that some of you, my faithful readers and long-time arguing buddies, will look at what I've just said about Moon and think, "Oh, sounds like another long boring SF snooze-fest like 2001," but even you will probably like this one. Things happen! It's good!
