Dead phone jacks are an affront to my delicate sensibilities. Thus, Thursday I acquired a toner and amp (a long-coveted set of test equipment) and today I rewired the various dead phone jacks in the new house so they all work. Oddly, this house was previously set up for at least 2 lines. Apparently the previous tenant was VERY secretive-- she kept the one bedroom locked and curtained and wouldn't let the landlord in even to do work. That's where the second (and possibly third) phone lines terminated. Perhaps she was doing something naughty, like webcasting porn. (That's basically what I suspected when he said this-- some kind of internet BDSM thing. I figured it would be that or growing pot, but weed doesn't need bandwidth.)
Anyway, now all the phone jacks work. This was kind of an issue because there are only 2 phone jacks with power near them. One was the previously-dead jack in what is now the pig room/library and the other was the jack in the kitchen, meaning that the DSL and wireless would share the same power as and sit atop the fridge. This was okay mostly, but not ideal. It's kind of hot up there and sitting a wireless broadcasty thing on top of a giant sheet of metal seems kind of silly. Now it's slightly farther away but I get a stronger signal. Go figure.
Anyway, hooray for wiring. Next up, figuring out how to add a working ground wire to the living room outlets. My UPS freaked out when I plugged it in, and a handy AC tester thingy lit up indicating no actual ground. I'm a little less blase about messing with AC, though.
