Somebody cut something important somewhere in San Jose, and Santa Cruz County was off the internet (and voice, AND without cell phone service) for almost 24 hours.

That was a fun day at work, I can tell you.

You think it inconvenienced you? What about those poor bastards who spent months rehearsing a meticulously prepared bank heist that relied heavily on mobile telecommunications and could only have been pulled yesterday? Their entire lives are ruined.

I was amused because I got to use one of those old fashioned credit card things at work. Also? When someone wanted me to look up a book/title/author etc for them, I didn't have to. Heh.

BTW..are you guys still coming over on the 19th (next Sunday)?

Interesting! It appears there are signs that this may not have been accidental.

I am reminded of the Metro West fiber outage some years back, in which someone (I was later told it was a disgruntled ex-Cablevision employee) drove down Route 128 one evening, pausing every little while to climb out and dig up some more Teleport fiber. It was most disconcerting, sitting in the UltraNOC and watching our POPs inside 128 go dark from north to south down the line in an eerily sequential fashion...

Yes! Pretty awesome, I guess. It seemed likely it wasn't an accident to start with, since a) the location of the cut was pretty much the best place to cut off huge parts of the Central Coast from the rest of the world, and b) they needed to cut multiple bundles of fiber to do it.

It's pretty strange when you call up the local network guy (who is sort of like aej except for networking) to find out what's up and he says that the TV news has more info than they do. (Cable TV wasn't cut, since that comes in via a different route.)
