Mount and Blade
Jan. 28th, 2009 02:01 amI've been playing Mount & Blade lately.
It does pretty much what it says on the tin. There are horses; there are blades. You ride one and fight with the other. It's a sort of middle-ages sandbox game where you roam around a countryside while political factions fight each other. You can recruit and train people from local villages and lead them into battle. It looks like a third-person-type game, where you get to watch your character ride around on a horse a lot, but it's really a tactical battle game where you can direct your troops around to fight each other and stuff. You beat up other groups of troops (anything from bandits to viking-type "Sea Raiders" to other people's groups of soldiers to trade caravans) and then can sell off the prisoners for ransom, sell their stuff, get hunted down by their relatives, and so on. It's pretty fun. It has a steep sort of learning curve, but once you figure out that you can take your unseasoned recruits to the training ground and beat on them with sticks for a while until they're tougher it makes a lot more sense. I guess eventually you can take up with a deposed heir to one of the many kingdoms (which grow and shrink depending on a number of factors) and lead them back to power or something. Not sure I'll get that far into it, but it's fun to ride around beating up bandits. I'm specializing in horse archery, and I have a nice big sword (I had to save up for it! for a LONG TIME!) for when I run out of arrows. Fun.
It's on Steam. It was worth the $7.50 it was this weekend, definitely. And now knowing what I know (that it's fun), I'd pay the 30 bucks or whatever, too. Recommended, if you're into this kind of thing.

Date: 2009-01-28 12:07 pm (UTC)So, by the time it was released, people had been playing it for YEARS. There is a huge community of players. Who write their own mods for it. And stuff.
It was a stable, playable, and FUN game as far back as 0.6, when I got it, and it just got better with each numbered release.
