I'm not, but it's quite clear that if I had that one, I'd be fascinated with all the early "evolution" phases. I have loved the Maxis games I've played.
There are very visible seams. Each leap forward (thing-in-water->creature->tribe->civilization->space) has a set goal which leads to the next stage. So, to go from creature to tribe, you have to befriend or extinct something like 4 or 7 other creatures, while gathering body parts and so on. And once you move on to a tribe, you lose access to the creature creator part of it, although when you get to civilizations you can design buildings and vehicles and so on.
