I lived there waaay back... before the Loma Prieta quake... and things changed a LOT because of that...
SC got more and more settled by PWM (people with money) and the easy going hippie surf bum attitude wasn't appreciated (tolerated) as much... back in the 70's it was still expensive but nothing like it is now...
There are still a couple of holes downtown where buildings collapsed in the quake... And the quake we had in October was the biggest since Lome Prieta, too. It was pretty exciting, although we didn't lose any important roads or anything this time...
I really like living in SC. I still try to avoid mentioning I'm connected with the school, since I think there's some resentment of the UC kids (and of dot-com workers, comin' in, raisin' our property values... So of course we're technically both).
Well, the impression of UC students is that they're rich kids come up from LA to pretend to be hippies for a while and spend their parents' money, talk a lot, and then leave after 4 years never to return. The college is pretty expensive, and the students are often vocal about being devoted to local issues, until they graduate and move on.
Although the tree-sitters opposing the LRDP (heh heh, look THAT one up if you haven't heard about it yet-- the Long-Range Development Plan is all set to make a mess of Santa Cruz and cause infrastructure problems and bring in thousands more students...) probably aren't going to graduate so soon, since I think they've been up in the trees since early in the term and have probably bombed all their classes by now...
I found Indybay.com... and was mildly amused by at least one of the postings of a young person who just realized that TPTB could access his online (MySpace) presence... duh...
And as silly as I personally see tree sitters... they *do* bring attention to the situation... and sometimes that's all it needs to get the attention of elders who object too... although I think that in this time of "OMG the terrorists are here and we have to smash down any resistance of our own citizens and derail their constitutional rights in order to keep them safe" that there isn't a whole lot of hope for any of us...
I just don't understand the apathy of your average US citizen... I didn't do tree sitting but I did plenty of marches and sit in's... although nowadays it's a good way to get your brains bashed in and I'm too old to run away fast enough when the "jack booted thugs"(tm) wade in to "restore order"
I *am* a constant bother to my state and federal representatives... for all the good that does... what happened to this country??? oh... right... Bush.
So... if UCSC is leaning more to the status quo of other non-California universities, including inviting outside police agencies on campus, I am really really depressed...

There WAS resentment about the valley people (San Jose) coming over and crowding up the town with their definitely NOT mellow attitudes...
