I am now a true Californian-- I have experienced my first earthquake.

It was very strange, and [livejournal.com profile] stophittinyrslf tells a slightly different story-- from what I've read, that's not unusual for earthquakes. The house shook, and I wondered for a moment if there was a truck idling outside or something before I realized that no, EVERYTHING was shaking. We live on the third floor, too, so it was especially apparent. I stood up as she came out of the kitchen, and I said, "I think we're having an earthquake," and then we kibitzed about standing in doorways or what. I mostly thought it was cool, once I got past the whole "Hey the house is moving" part.

This was also a pretty big one-- a 5.6. Fünf auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala, for the Einstürzende Neubauten fans out there.

Then we had some hot buttered rum, with vegan fake butter (less than the recipe called for of real butter, even) and extra spices. It was very tasty. We'll probably make it again sometime, like, next year. Delicious, but dang. Hot spiced butter. Eek.

Somehow, out of the six adults I was with lat night, only one felt it. He was giving the kids a bath. The rest of us must have been moving around too much for the shaking underfoot to notice it.

I am certain this will be a topic of conversation with my students today.

The Hayward Fault is *long* overdue for a big quake. Last one was in the late 1800s.

Congratulations on your first earthquake!

Also, I used to have roommates who made hot buttered rum about three times a week during the winter. It SUCKED because I was on a diet. I hated them.

Yeah, we used much less butter than it was supposed to have, and it was still pretty thick. And it wasn't real butter, so no cholesterol. But still, dang. Drinks shouldn't set up if you let them cool down. It was sure tasty, though.

Years ago, a quake hit Quebec. I was coming upstairs from the basement when it hit, and my (now ex-)wife yelled at me for stomping too hard on the stairs and shaking the glasses. She trailed off when she realized they were still shaking as she was getting to her second digression in her rant.

It's good to know that earthquakes inspire you to drink hot spiced butter. You should come up here for a volcano. We could drink something else.
