As I suspected, rhythm game + boss battles = the sucky levels I will attempt to never play again, ever. How irritating. Why didn't Harmonix include such obvious video game tropes in their original games? Because they SUCK and make the game DUMB. Sheesh. Way to take a generally positive experience ("Dude, I am jammin' wif my frends!") and make it annoying. Fuck the damn boss battles-- I just want to get to the good songs! As if getting past the crappy songs wasn't hard enough already. Sheesh.

Date: 2007-10-31 07:52 am (UTC)Mostly my problem is with having to play things I'm only sort of into more than once. If it's a cool song, I can play it a few times (and I did so in order to 5-star a couple that I didn't ace the first time through. I'm playing medium because I am a wimp.), but the guitar battles are pure wanking, with the stupid boss battle mechanic tacked on. Guitar Hero is really a casual game for me-- I am good enough that I can 5-star everything on medium first time through. I did it on GH2 (with a couple of notable and very annoying exceptions), the 80's Edition, and I'm on my way through on GH3. That way I get all the songs unlocked, get so I've heard the songs I don't know at least once or twice, and get a handle on stuff for trying on Hard. Hard is actually hard, so I have to practice and stuff-- it's much less relaxing and I can't just pick up the cheesy plastic guitar and play for fun. Dropping a stupid competitive boss battle in the middle of my fun is VERY ANNOYING. I am pretty sure that Harmonix know this-- I'd like to think so, anyway, because I think they are generally very very good at figuring out how to make this kind of game fun. It's all part of their philosophy-- to make it like playing in a band without all that nasty overhead of actually learning how to play an instrument (although, heh, the Rock Band drums are going to be like playing drums, I'm sure). Competing with another guitar player and trying to fuck up his playing on-stage during a gig is not cooperative. The thing with being on stage is that if you're playing a show and one of you screws up, you all look bad. Harmonix know this because they're mostly actual musicians, and know how that works. I seriously doubt that Neversoft have a similar background.
