The previous favorite crazed AI (before Shodan) was Durandal. I mean, of course.

I did this and could have stopped it.

Alas, macgamer.com doesn't seem to still have my mighty news postings up any more. Sadness. :(

I am STILL the person who broke the story of Halo being released for the Mac and PC FIRST! Yeah!

GLaDOS, SHODAN, Durandal...

Does Melissa fit into this anywhere? How about Friend Computer? HAL?

HAL was long before Bungie, and I had to look up Melissa since I didn't actually pay much attention to ilovebees... Bungie has always been good at that kind of thing, though, and at naming things in general (...which is yet another of their obvious homages to Iain M. Banks-- have you read any of his Culture books? You should!). And, well, if you mean The Computer from Paranoia, then it is, of course, my MOST FAVORITE EVER. Only a traitor would ever consider anything else, and so I felt that since my loyalties are not in question it would waste the Computer's valuable time to even include it in such a list, since obviously it would be on top of any such list ever made. In fact, I probably should have entitled this list "Favorite crazed AIs besides Friend Computer," and I apologize for the oversight. And what do I mean by "crazed?" I mean, of course, that I am CRAZY about them! Of course!

"Bill sings to Sarah.
Sarah sings to Bill.
Perhaps they will do other dangerous things together."
...
"Love is strange.
but so are typewriters."

(I have really no idea what these threads have been about, but since this is the bit of a computer-written poem I still remember from college, it seemed like the right place to share it.)

Shoot, I'd totally forgotten RACTER. That was a neat piece of software. Basically incomprehensible, but still lots of fun to play with.

"Love is strange, but so are typewriters" is my favorite phrase of the day. Thanks. 8)

Oh, I've been talking about artificial intelligences from video games who lead the player around for various reasons having them do various things and who shift around between ally, enemy, narrator, and so on as the plot of the game requires.
