I think it's pretty cool, but I bet there are people it would annoy. They didn't play it up as silly or anything, and they start out laughing, but by the end they're pretty much rocking out on the ukes. So yeah, I like it.
I just managed to clue myself in that the song is a cover. Now I can see more clearly why that toes the line of brilliant vs. back-to-box.
I still say brilliant. I love the random-ish hand-clap that in there, about 1/3 of the way through. And the fact that the Ukelele guys have got their body motions in synch as well. The lyrics are brilliant.
Ah, yeah. It's Gary Numan, the "Cars" guy-- this was his other hit. He's one of those people who (like lots of Leonard Cohen) covers quite well. Some of his later stuff is covered better than the original, too, like the Saint Etienne "Stormtrooper in Drag."
You know, I realized after having dinner last month that I should have brought you a mix CD or something, and then realized the utter futility of trying to compress the, what-- over ten years of music since the last tape I made you into a single CD, or even a few CDs.
Hard to cover 10 years like that, true. You could do one for each year, but that's quite a project, and more like a music education class. Or just really narrow stuff down. I'd lovea CD filled with decent music that enables my science habit.
I want the guys who did this YouTube vid to have an album for me to buy. So much fun!
