Jul. 5th, 2007 02:11 pmWe went to Monterey (actually Pacific Grove, but we were a block from the aquarium) for my birthday. It was relaxing and got me out of San Jose, which I definitely needed.
About two blocks down the street was a stretch of road you might have read about. A little farther down was a memorial.
Not much left of that time, though. Cannery Row is still a poem, a stink, a grating noise, but it's a different stink and the poem is about something else, and the grating noise is the sound of construction machinery at work. Ed Rickett's lab sits between a vast building site, soon to be home of a variety of businesses catering to tourists, and a cinderblock building housing a t-shirt shop with a weathered board facade designed to blur the line between it and the lab. We walked past it without even noticing the first day we were there.
The aquarium was pretty cool, though. And it's a decent area to walk around once you get out of the tourist zone. Good restaurants and nice bleak rocky shoreline. This morning it was foggy and cold and the sea was grey and crashed over rocks and stuff. We stayed at The Martine Inn, which was quiet and pretty. I spent much of the afternoon of the 4th reading in their courtyard garden.
Now we're back in San Jose. I'd rather still be in Pacific Grove. It was a good birthday thing.
