That was one of the most beautiful films I've ever watched. I will probably dream about it. Hell, I probably HAVE dreamed about it, or close enough. More on this later if I feel expansive.
And now, Stalker/S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spoilers. I'm talking about the ending(s) of the game, so I'm definitely giving SOMETHING away. If you're going to play the game, don't click unless you've come up with at least 2 of the the potential endings. (2 are easy. The third is slightly easier. More than that and you may have to go do some more stuff out in the Zone before heading for the sarcophagus.)
The player appears in a couple of cutscenes in Stalker the game.
He is VERY clearly modeled on Aleksandr Kajdanovsky, the Stalker in the movie. In fact, I just showed one of the Wish Granter endings to
stophittinyrslf, and she said, "Oh, hey, it's the guy." It's him.
The endings I've seen, with Mr. Protagonist surrounded by burgeoning green and beautiful blooming plants, are clearly directly inspired by the scene early on in Stalker the movie where Kajdanovsky leaves the Writer and the Professor alone for a few minutes to walk out into the Zone and lay down in the greenery and listen to the pure silence. The game endings where the Zone disappears are, while not shot-for-shot identical, nearly indistinguishable from the movie here.
[end of spoilers]
I have Roadside Picnic printed out for a bit of evening reading. I think I will be completing the trifecta starting tonight.
