Apr. 27th, 2007 11:38 amI've been playing "Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl" lately. It's an incredible game, even with the bugs (I've been okay with it so far) and high system requirements. Here's a review I pretty much agree with.
I knew that they'd based much of the landscape in the game on the real landscape in the area around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. I was looking around various satellite photo sites today and was struck by how accurate it is (although they did play with the relative placement of some bits for the sake of game flow). For example, I have picked off soldiers with a sniper rifle from the balcony of the Palace of Culture in Prypyat. I ran across that little curvy bit of roof and hopped onto the roof of the restaurant there while trying to avoid somebody else with a sniper rifle who thought he'd get clever. (And the AI is VERY clever. Lucky for me I had a better rifle. Not so lucky for him.)
So, good game, and a little shiver at seeing the satellite photos and realizing exactly how close it is. Recommended.
