Okay, the big updatey update!

For anyone who missed it when I posted a couple of weeks ago (it was friend-locked and I haven't updated my various access lists in a long time, so please don't be offended if you can't see it), [livejournal.com profile] stophittinyrslf and I are moving to California next month. We're going to be packing stuff up for movers at the end of May. When the books and furniture are on their way, we'll be packing the pigs into little piggy boxes, getting in the car and heading west. She will be going to school at UC Santa Cruz in the fall. I will be, well, I'm not sure what I'll be doing yet, but I've been doing some phone interviewing with the largest and most obvious possible company and I'm hoping to hear about the next stage of that process (or if there will be a next stage) within the next few days.

Heck, we don't even have a set place to live yet, but we're working on that as well, and we have at least one place to stay for a day or two while we sort it out. Pretty exciting.

I'd like to note that it does not snow in Santa Cruz. It's 70 degrees there and sunny today. They say it might rain a little bit on Friday.

It'll often be foggy and cool in the summer. Just so you know.

I am totally okay with foggy and cool. Remember, I grew up in Oregon... Foggy and cool for California will be comparatively balmy.

wow! good luck! you're completing the obligatory cycle of moving to CA after living in MA. I'm sure you'll meet plenty of NE ex-pats out there.

It snows in the hills outside of Santa Cruz, though. And going over 17 to San Jose and points beyond can be a really nasty drive in the winter due to mudslides. Just fair warning, cuz SC itself is sorta separated from a large chunk of the Bay area by a buncha hills, and I knew someone who made the drive daily and was made nervous by it even after years of doing it -- even in good weather. Be careful on that route and try to not take it during the height of rush hour.

I didn't spend much time in SC (I went, uh... twice?) so I don't know what living there is like other than less expensive than SJ and points north, thankfully for you. It's a bit of a tourist area because of the Boardwalk, that I do know.

I hope you enjoy California more than I did. The weather change is only nice if you don't like weather, IMO, but obviously there's people who love it.

Beware of allergies changing or springing up. That got me.

Yeah, unfortunately I may be experiencing the 17 drive fairly often. I'm hoping to be able to adjust my schedule accordingly and/or work from home. It is a pretty scary road, though.

Santa Cruz, from the roughly 5 hours I've spent there, seems pretty pleasant. It has a couple of good used record stores, a very friendly comic book store, and some food. I liked it...

You'll want to go to Saturn Cafe downtown :) And, any time you want to grab chow before heading over 17 let me know. I suspect my work location will not be inconvenient for such a thing.

Man, I'm jealous. I loved California, and the area around Santa Cruz was lovely. Friendly people, beautiful countryside, good weather - what's not to like?

Best of luck with the move (and with househunting if you've not started that yet).

We kind of have started house hunting... It looks like we'll be living somewhere temporary during June and moving into something more permanent in July. Ideally, the UCSC campus family housing will open up then (since their classes end mid-June, there should be something available in July as students move out), and we'll live on-campus there. Dang, that's a pretty campus.

Who are you moving with? And how much is it costing? I have to do the same thing (except that I"ll have hamsters in my little piggy boxes). We should talk. You should move my furniture for me!

We're using <A href="http://www.upack.com/>U-Pack</a> and their "ReloCube" things. That seems easiest, since there's no way they'll get an 18-wheeler down Dover Street... It's spendy, but no more so than normal trucks, and less expensive than renting a cross-country u-haul. Plus we get a couple of days to pack before they come and pick it up.

Safe travels! my move from the west coast to the middle of the fly over states was okay but soooooo long... I miss the west coast and my friends and family there. The Cruz is great even if it is crowded... there's always Corralitos if you want to put a little distance between you and the mobs...

Let me know if you're interested in connections once you get settled.

Sounds good. Getting internet over there is a high priority, so I'll be in touch on-list once we're there. Thanks. 8)

Best of luck to you. Have a great time out there. I know several people now who work for "Big CA Based Internet Company". Dunno if that will help you any.
