My pronunciation of the word is probably influenced by where I'm originally from (PA), but I *have* the varmints in my backyard here in MA. They like to eat kitties and doggies in my neighborhood, and they've adapted to hunt in larger packs than normal.
There are a couple living behind the gas station on the corner of Dover and Institute, I think. I spotted one once, walking down the middle of the street... They're more common than people think-- they're just very good at staying out of sight.
There really is no term that I'm aware of for the culturally/dialectically cohesive region of the US that includes Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, the Maryland panhandle, and Rochester/Buffalo area. It's part of the Northeast but it's not New England or the Mid-Atlantic, and it's not the south or midwest. This further complicates things when you're trying to break down the US into regions like "New England Except For Maine." :P
I had a run-in with a Kai-Oh-Tee on 117 in Sudbury one night.
He was standing in the middle of the road. I was on the bike.
I stopped, we sat there staring at each other for several seconds while I contemplated my lack of doors to lock, or windows to roll up, and he finally decided I wasn't worth it and sauntered off.
Coyotes are ALL OVER this state; they're just good at keeping out of sight and living on the easy prey of housepets.
Ahem, as I was trying to say when LJ decided to eat my comment:
That may be the normal size of a coyote, but I've seen bigger ones in the Chicago area. (Yes, there are a TON of coyotes in the Chicago area. No wolves to speak of, and anyhow they look a lot different). It's possible the bigger ones have interbred with stray dogs, I suppose, but they had pretty distinctive snouts and also nothing else sounds like them.
Depends on the coyotes. They are NOT small here. There are no wolves in the local canyon preserve. There *are* coyotes -- I checked with the park ranger. The one I saw down there was at least as tall as my waist, and BUILT. Big. Much bigger than I expected.
Some "coyotes" in the NE region are hybrids of coyotes and eastern timberwolves. They look like coyotes but are big enough to take down deer and other animals.
Note that we have Coyote Valley to the south, so all the newspeople say it the way i say it (or the more correct co-yo-tee, or the even correcter co-yo-teh). I have no idea where the "ki" sound comes from. I blame stupid cowboy singers from the `50s.

Reminds me of the regional dialect discussions we'd have about beverages or whatnot back in that hostel we lived in. What brought on this discussion?
