Ok, so help me out here, becuase I think I'm not quite reading this correctly from context and urban dictionary was too diffuse to be of help. The kids use it all the time, and clearly I'm unable to pick up the context clues I normally use for slang.
1) What does "emo" mean, exactly, esp. when used in the context above. 2) If I'm thinking back on my high school days, how do I pick out the emo kids? What about now?
In this context, "emo" means "whiny and mopey." Both kaypoisson and I have people who are away doing school projects far away for C-term. Her guy is in Thailand, and my girl is in California. (Mountain View, even.) They'll be back in another 4 or 5 weeks, but right now, it's mopey hangin'-out-at-home-alone time for both of us.
This use of "emo" comes from the stereotype of the emo music aficionado as a whiny angsty sort, inclined to bouts of self-pity and general mopery. Thus, "Don't be so emo" means "Shut up about your problems already," and "sorry to be so emo" means "I realize I've been whining at you guys and you are totally patient to put up with me."
Emo kids are sort of like indie kids but mopier. If they dig Belle and Sebastian (the band) they're probably emo. If they like Dashboard Confessional or The Get-Up Kids or Built to Spill or any band with "Autumn" and "Ashes" and "Tears" or that sort of thing in the name, they're probably emo. ("My Tears Fall As Autumn Ashes" for example.)
I don't think there were really emo kids back in our high school days... We had punks and goths and stuff, but I guess... Maybe mopey new wave kids? Kids who really liked The Cure and Depeche Mode but weren't actually all the way goth, but just liked it because it was sad? Goth has always been too self-aware to be emo...
You're right, I don't think there were (many) emo kids in our HS days. I can think of a few indie artsy kids who probably would have fallen into that category. I was probably emo in high school, but without the whole indie rock angle. I'd probably have curshes on all the emo boys if I were a HS girl now.
I stand in front of 180 all day, and I don't think I'd be able to sort them into their categories very successfully.
and as for you being emo, you should just get on a plane and come out here! visit your lady, we can do dinner! MV is in my flight-plan 5 days a week. (Tell me you've already been out here, though, and didn't come hi, and -I'll- be emo)
That's awesome. My uncle goes mushroom hunting in the mountains in the state where he lives. I'll have to send this to my dad to show him or something. He doesn't have a PC or internet connection.
A colorblind friend at my old field station and I liked to go mushroom hunting. Mostly just to look at the cool stuff. Wolf's Milk Drops were our favorite. We only ever collected the wild chanterelle and the hawk's wing, which are fairly unmistakeable. This was very important to him, since several years before he'd mistaken something which looked a lot like your Frost's Bolete for a tasty Bolete. It wasn't; it was some quite poisonous Amanita. His buddy had to pack him out back to town and he drank charcol shakes in the hospital for 3 days. Mmm. Tasty.
I don't eat any mushrooms I pick. I don't actually even pick them... I just found these outside one day and decided they looked nice enough to take pictures of.
The phone number of the expert listed on that page, David Arora, became my mobile number after Santa Cruz was given its own area code. I haven't gotten any calls for him lately, but it was a somewhat regular occurrence.
