Best science ever!!!!

Red wine may fight deafness

MODERATE consumption of red wine or aspirin may delay the onset of age-related deafness and reduce hearing loss caused by loud noise and some antibiotics.

The delicate hairs of the inner ear which are vital for hearing can be damaged by the oxygen free radicals produced by normal cellular processes throughout life and in response to loud noise and exposure to antibiotics. Antioxidants such as resveratrol, which is found in red wine and green tea, or salicylate, the active ingredient of aspirin, help to neutralise these free radicals, so might be expected to protect against some of this damage.

Ha!

As somebody who has had some sort of tinnitus going on since, oh, 1992 or so (I blame Big Catholic Guilt and LNL!), and who likes red wine, this is the best news ever. Hooray!

And consumption of tannin over time makes it much easier for the taxidermists to preserve your hide when the time comes!

When I make out a will I'll have to be sure to leave you my tummy skin for a hat. Make sure they put my navel right on top.

I'll have to think a little before deciding who gets an ass-hat.

And according to London cab drivers, a coating of Thick Red Tannins on your innards leads to improved health overall.

That's more or less what he was like. His claim was that he could smoke because the tannins coating his insides from all the tea he drank cancelled it out.

I think most (black) cabbies are like that.

Minicabs are a bit more of an adventure. My favourite excursion was with some chap who must have been the Afghan or Iranian ex rally champion. For the first half of the run I was laughing in terror, for the second half I was navigating (in the rally style) since he'd thrown me the A-Z and told me to get on with it. I swear we did about sixty through Grosvenor Square.

yes, it is also often used to treat glaucoma because it lowers your eye pressure.

it wasn't entirely sad news to me the last time i was at the eye doctor and they were like, 'wow, your eye pressure is wicked high.'

my mom drinks red wine regularly, and she's got age related hearing loss at age 57.5... so it doesn't always help.
