This is the 10, the most easily available without actually leaving Worcester.
It's sort of an experiment. I'm still a noob, really-- I've read Raw Spirit and I'm trying things that sound interesting. The 18-year Highland Park was a rousing success, and this is another, but differently so. I can certainly see why people say Laphroaig is an acquired taste. I actually like the aggressive peat, although I don't think I'd pick this for a relaxing sort of evening boozery, but it's definitely interesting and worth keeping around.
Yeah, anything past the 10 is tough to come by. I know a few places out this way to get decent stuff if you're interested in a journey.
I wasn't real impressed with the 18HP, but that's due to a friend having a special 20-ish direct from the distillery (got it while touring). I couldn't stand Macallan until I had a bottle from the SMWS, though. Mmmmmmmm. If I lived Over There, I'd be way more into it, as you can try-before-you-buy through them. But since I don't drink lots, having lots of open bottles is counterproductive.
Yeah, I figured it must be you. Even in fairly short paragraphs, your writing has a distinctive flavor to it. Much like (dare I say it?) Laphroaig.
(...and I can still smell the peaty smoke from the residue drying in the bottom of my glass, two feet away and a good hour old... It's like a campfire, which might mean I'm really getting a nostalgia kick from drinking the smell of childhood memories...)
I haven't been out your way in quite a while, actually.
heh. Laphroaig is one of the few which i know by taste AND smell. A friend was drinking scotch the other day, sat down next to me, and i looked at him and said, 'you're drinking Laphroaig, aren't you?'. and yes, i like it's 'aggressive' earthiness as well.
