The Cybermen are back...

A little silly-looking, but they wouldn't be Cybermen if they weren't kind of silly looking. At least they're not wearing silver pajamas any more...

Looks too much like Twiggy to me, Buck.

Can't wait. I think I should order the DVDs. murph won't watch the episodes on my laptop, and frankly I'd like to think that buying the DVDs will encourage the franchise to continue.

I bought the DVDs... They're region 2, but they'll play on VLC on Windows (not on the Mac, though, unfortunately). There are plenty of ways around that.

Yeah, [livejournal.com profile] usagijer said he has them as well.

I'd like to pick the set up for my mom, so I figured I'd just wait and order them for Christmas and get mine at the same time.

I liked the ones from the mid-late '80s best, not only because they looked cool and menacing, but also because the voice effects weren't done in post, the way, say, Darth Vader's were in Star Wars, but actually accomplished by having electronics in the helmets that modulated the actors' voices into magnified electronic baritones. In the little making-of documentary appended to the VHS version of Silver Nemesis, there's a clip featuring David Banks, the Cyber Leader, giving the director a quizzical head-tilt and then booming, "Wot's he saying? I cawn't hear anything."

Those are the ones where you could see them talking through a clear chinpiece on the helmets, right?

I thought that was pretty cool-- it makes it clear that they're not just brains in robots (like humanoid daleks) but actually people with stuff stuck on them. If the ST:TNG writers try to claim they didn't use Cybermen as some kind of inspiration for the Borg, they need to be punched.

Compared to the farting aliens, these guys are positively menacing!

Yeaaaaaaaaaaah. I'm hoping there's no more of the comedy alien business coming up, although they got a little more interesting the last time what's-her-name appeared. Still pretty irritating, overall, though.
