Lo, I find myself re-vehicled.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good charities to which I can donate my old Saturn?

He cannot show you what the Matrix XRS is. You have to see...

...no, I can't do it.

(But that's ok. We don't have to talk about the Matrix, we can talk about... stuff. Your favorite bands... Chicks who've broken your heart... The Matrix.)

NPR (specifically, WBUR) regularly mentions that they take car donations, if you like supporting public radio.

Oh, yeah:

I donated my old car to Special Olympics a couple of years ago. They were very prompt, not a sketchy organization and left the receipt in my mailbox. I recommended them to another co-worker recently and they were still prompt, but not as good about leaving a receipt, so make sure you emphasize you need one when you call.

I think their website is recycleforgold.org

My sister tried to donate hers to a religious organization and it took them like a month to pick it up, so you might also want to ask about turnaround times.

Does it run? You might be able to sell it to some poor shmuck who's dumb enough to leave a career-track programming job to live in squalid poverty seeking higher education.

Note the new tax laws for this year:

http://www.hvaa.com/automobile_donation_2005_tax_law.htm

I haven't gone through it all, but it seems like you need to file some additional headache-y paperwork, and possibly get it appraised?

I've donated to the special olympics and WBUR in the past. Secretly, I hoped the kids would use the '84 Saab 900 in a special olympics demolition derby. :)

I'd like to get _something_ for it, but if she wants a car that's going to need, basically, about $2000 of work sometime in the next 10,000 miles and with a leaky roof, uh, we can talk.

Things that need to be fixed to make it reliable include: the clutch, the transmission, the brakes, the power steering (still working, but making funny noises), and a belt tensioner on the engine. Plus it leaks. And the windshield wipers occasionally collide and tear one another apart, which is bad when you're tooling down the Pike at 75 miles an hour.

Umm... wow... your car is actually in worse shape than hers. Couldn't trade it in? May not have got much for it but at least you wouldn't have to deal with it.

They offered me $300, which made it seem more worthwhile to donate it. I have to wait for the tax deduction, but at least it's less likely to be a laughably tiny amount.

They may not take it at all if it's in that rough a shape. I had a roommate who's car was rejected.
