doctor who, last episode
Jun. 18th, 2005 10:30 pmThings that bug me, first:
- tardis rules changed. materializing on top of Rose and a Dalek and having them be, like, inside the tardis? Um, not so sure about that. In fact, I think it's been established in the past that this is not actually possible.
- pulling the tardis open with a truck? Yeah, okay. I guess. I wish she'd come up with something like "Hey, I can just sort of mentally think it open" or something... Using a tow truck is so, um, low-tech.
- Deus Ex Rosina! But hey, all-powerful time goddess Rose! Go Rose! Except she didn't save the dumb ponytail chick. Sad ponytail chick. Now who is Captain Jack going to boink? Sad Captain Jack. :(
- the doctor kissed a companion??? AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Things I like:
- daleks finally overcame pretty much all of their technical drawbacks. Now they can swivel their midsections and domes separately! And they can fly! And I dig the specialized cutting-tool dalek. I want to see a whole bunch of specialized daleks-- show me the Swiss Army Knife Dalek! Look, it's got a corkscrew-- it's the sommolier dalek! And an awl and a file and a router and a chop saw and stuff! Woodworking dalek! Yeah!
- ...but you can still shoot their eyes out! "My vision is impaired! I cannot see! My vision is impaired!" Not as elegant as Tom Baker just slinging his hat over the eyestalk, but still pretty hip.
- Captain Jack kissed the Doctor. Holy crap, it's the 21st century. On the BBC.
- The Doctor kissed a companion??? Well, okay, they've been playing with the sexual tension between Rose and the Doctor since the first episode. It's been building and building and building, and although it's really obvious, it's never been overtly expressed. I actually like that. It's the old "Teenagers From Outer Space" trope-- "Having sex? Not funny. Not getting to have sex? VERY FUNNY." Having the Doctor get all jealous while Captain Jack is putting the moves on Rose has been highly entertaining. I'm glad he finally got a chance to do _something_.
-
- this was the most efficient regeneration ever. Two minutes, tops, and no running around for four episodes with rice crispies glued to his face. What a relief that must be! BAM, regenerated!
- "I'm a coward." Yep. That's the Doctor we love.
But, yeah. End of first new season. It's not old-school Doctor Who. I still want to know more about the Time War and all sorts of things.
I hope this David Tennant fellow isn't annoying. I've gotten very attached to Mr. Eccleston, and Mr. Tennant looks very young.

Date: 2005-06-19 09:13 am (UTC)- What REALLY went on in the time war?
- 2 Daleks fell through time huh? lucky
- Why did the Doctor keep referring to Mickey as Ricky I thought that was going to resolve into something
- I didn't really follow the Tardis = Badwolf resolution. How and why did the Tardis do that stuff. Wouldn't it have been easier to alert the doctor to the Daleks when they were still weak.
- We know from previous series the Tardis has a life of its own and turns up at convenient times in history but?
- Was the Jagrafes thing put on satelite 5 by the Daleks or the Tardis?
I did like the series s a whole though.
p.s. I do like how many websites were full of misinformation such as Adam returning, Davros etc.

Date: 2005-06-19 08:45 pm (UTC)On the contrary; something like that has, in fact, been done at least once in the old series, and I vaguely recall that I've seen it once or twice in print fiction. The one solid example that comes to mind is in "Logopolis", the final 4th Doctor story, in which the Doctor materializes the TARDIS around a real police box to get measurements with which he intended to make repairs to the Chameleon Circuit.
(Well, it was supposed to be a real police box; turned out it was the Master's TARDIS, which was itself disguised as a police box, and that caused some time/space trouble with having one TARDIS inside of another, but other than that, the concept of materializing a TARDIS around something to bring it inside is not new and, in general, given sufficiently accurate coordinates, should work just fine.
I did think that using a truck to pry open the TARDIS console was rather odd, though. I, also, thought that Rose was going to eventually have to try to sweet-talk it open or something other than just use a bigger vehicle. And I was sad that they left Captain Jack behind at the end, 'cause he was funny and was an example of that rarest of Companion types, the Companion With Enough Separate Action Hero Cred To Not Be Dependent On The Doctor (As Much).
the doctor kissed a companion??? AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
This, also, has been done at least once, assuming we a) aren't ignoring the TV-movie, b) accept Grace as a Companion (she does at least travel in the TARDIS). I don't know what this kiss really had to do with absorbing the Time Vortex from Rose, but whatever, that's fine.
but you can still shoot their eyes out! "My vision is impaired! I cannot see! My vision is impaired!"
I cheered when that classic line was uttered. I also liked how, when some of those Daleks out in space went to the window to kill Lynda, you saw the Daleks' head-lamps blink, and even though you can't hear 'em 'cause they're in space, you can tell by the on/off timing of the head-lamps that they're saying, "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!" That was a nice touch.
Captain Jack kissed the Doctor. Holy crap
I'm kind of surprised they went ahead and did it, though conceptually I could see it coming. Ever since Jack showed up, there'd been almost as much Jack/Doctor subtext as there has been Jack/Rose or Rose/Doctor subtext.
"Turlough, K-9, and Mickey can be in a show together!" Well, okay, I'd watch that.
Dude. So would I. With extra bonus points for the Brigadier, at least. Harry Sullivan, I could take or leave; he is, after all, an imbecile, as the Doctor points out, very loudly, once.
I've been quite pleased with this season, overall, and with the finale, even if some of the plot resolution was kind of murky. Looking forward to next season. (Want it now now NOW! Don't wanna wait however long! Wah!)
