2001 Ironstone Vineyard Cabernet Franc

Sort of like a less-assertive Cabernet Sauvignon. An understated wine, which, while not pushy in the way toward which many cabernet sauvignon's tend, is still possessed of enough personality that you won't be curious about what sort of wine you're drinking. It's like a cabernet through a graphic equalizer with the "tannic" and "slaty" sliders pushed way down. Cabernet franc is usually used for mixing with cabernet sauvignons that are too tannic or slatey or otherwise pushy. It's like a sauvignon, but restrained. It's very dry, but has a lot of grapey flavors. It seems almost like port, but isn't sweet-- think of what port would be before the sweet brandy is added. It's a very interesting flavor, and I recommend it to enthusiasts or to people interested in what makes their wines. From the flavor, I can see it being added to a sauvignon in order to tone down the tannic or too-dry notes. For a mixer, it makes a pretty good drink on its own. Recommended.

Rex Goliath 47 Pound Rooster Cabernet Sauvignon

Not a particularly amazing vintage, but still very acceptable. The Rex Goliath 47-pound rooster wines have, in general, been good and cheap, which makes them particularly appealing. Their pinot noir was very nice, and their cab is also very pleasant. I think I'd more highly recommend their pinot noir, but if you're into the second or third bottle of the evening and most of your guests were well into the "schnockered" range of booziness, you could do significantlly worse than uncorking a bottle of Rex Goliate Cabernet Sauvignon. At least it won't offend the ones who have been holding back along the way. I sure haven't. Whoop.

BUT WE NEED THE BOOKSHELVES

oh god the bookshelves, they call me they call me and my heart, my mind it is drawn and one day I know I will build them and they will be complete built on a foundation of iron forged from my soul, and all else will be burned away.

i have always found him to be amusing when drunk, which is why i continue to ply him with booze...

hard to say if it's been a lifelong thing, though.

WEll, selections from his 16th year suggest so. Whilst 10 of us were all lying in a drunken mass in a hallway, he told this girl that she had beautiful knees. My favorite, though, is when we both knocked back a few Apple Wishkeys (typo, but I'm keeping it!) and he suggested we lean against one another and sing, and make them think we were drunk. "Um, I think we already are....?"

Enjoy the amusement 1st hand for those of us who can't.

I think I've only become more amusing. You got to see the start of it, though.

I am now heading toward angsty, though. Hum. Still, yay. I stand by my recomendations of those wines, in that order.

That was an odd year, and presaged a whole lot of things I wouldn't have expected. We are develop as we go, and while we change as we grow, in some ways we don't change at all.

I liked the Ironstone cab franc i had, i think it was the `99, some time ago. I just had this fantastic cab franc from Graeser, which is on Diamond Mountain, which is apparently a very coveted location, and some recent releases from wineries in that vicinity go as high as $150. However, the Graeser was a mere $28, and well worth it. A close #2 is Cooper-Garrod's cab franc.

I haven't had a bad cab franc yet.
