Short form:
Thursday, acquired GameCube and some games. And comics. Free comics! Lots of free comics!
Friday, music!
Saturday, records! GameCube! Cheese! Music! Scrabble!
Sunday, GameCube! Dinner! GameCube! PHP! MySQL! GameCube!
Comics were funded entirely by trading in a very small box of TurboGraphix 16 games at That's Entertainment. This box of games was acquired when the WPI ACM threw out(!!!) a bunch of old consoles, the jerks. I grabbed the games and told them I was going to take them and trade them in for comics. They shrugged. There were maybe 20 old TG16 games, ranging from random RPGs to Bonk's Adventure and Bomberman.
When I got to TE and handed them over, Evan,
usagijer's cousin's indie boyfriend, dug through the box and his eyes got real big. "You know," he said, "you could probably make much more if you sold these on eBay yourself." I told him not to worry about it, and that it wasn't worth the trouble to me, especially since the last two things I've sold there were complicated by foreign scammers and general dorks making it tough for me to just sell crap. It turned out okay in the end (and one of the scammers got their account cancelled, although I'm sure they've already been back and been cancelled another few times since then) but it really wasn't worth the trouble. "Okay," he said, and began totalling up the tradein. "You want cash or store credit?" "Oh, definitely credit," I said, "Since I'd just spend it here anyway."
I hadn't been in all last month, since I'd been broke. I had a six-inch stack of issues in my subscription box. I trolled through the stacks and picked up another few graphic novels and things I keep forgetting to have added to my sub list. Finally I headed back to the counter.
"Okay," he said, "it comes out to one sixty-nine in credit."
I kind of paused. "A hundred and sixty-nine bucks?" I wasn't quite sure I'd heard that right.
"Yep."
So I basically got an entire month's worth of comics for free, plus I had enough left over for a 30-dollar gift certificate, which I will bring back next time and use for the next round of comics.
I celebrated Free Comics Day For Me with a bottle of the 47-pound Roster Pinot Noir, which has become my cheap-booze value of all time. 9 bucks, and it's more than just a respectable red-- it's a very tasty and pleasant Pinot Noir, and I highly recommend it. It's well worth the 9 bucks, and I'd go so far as to say that if it were a 16-dollar bottle I'd still be very pleased. This is probably one to pick up a few of while they're still out there, since once it gets noticed it'll probably get more expensive and/or vanish.
Friday evening, music and hanging out and talking until late in the night.
Saturday morning, hooked up GameCube. Played Metroid Prime for about half an hour, then switched to Pikmin at the urging of young lady friend. We swapped off playing Pikmin until 5 or so, at which point we went out for fancy French cheeses and CDs. Picked up Brian Eno reissues and the new M.Ward album. Came home to eat cheese and play Scrabble. Actually got within 100 points of
stophittinyrslf for once!
Eventually crashed. Sunday, got up, played Pikmin some more. Lots and lots of Pikmin. It's very fun.
Then, sushi with
usagijer and
delenn1122 and and
stophittinyrslf at Fugakyu. Yum. Then, more Pikmin and eventual crashing. While the young lady played Pikmin, I entertained myself by relinking PHP with the current MySQL drivers on the WPI web server, fixing the ongoing Tech News problems.
Today, a slab of sourdough bread and my latest cheddar for breakfast, and a big glass of water. Yum. Soon, meeting. Then, I'm sure, all kinds of loudness and politics and potential badness. But the weekend? The weekend was lovely and relaxing from start to finish and I'm pretty well recharged and ready to go.
