Hm. I don't see the comparison, really... Have you read more than Perdido Street Station? He gets better.

Nope. Perdido Street Station is the only one I attempted to slog through. I gave up around page 134, somewhere around the million utterance of the words "dirt", "filth", and "ooze".

Does his prose get less purple in his later books?

It tightens up a bit, and he uses it more in service of the plot than vice-versa.

I haven't read those, but Eric Flint is apparently a Trotskyite as well. Course, he's kind of a pulp writer, so you may not like him as much.

I keep meaning to get around to picking up something by Ken Macleod.

Yep. It's a little dated now, but they're totally vehement that Stalin must go.
