I've been poking around archive.org recently, and aside from their huge collection of live recordings (dominated by the Grateful Dead, but also containing several Mountain Goats shows and a bunch of other interesting things), they've got a bunch of old cartoons.

Out of curiosity (and because I am inevitably earwormed by anyone just saying "hidey hidey hidey hi!"), I downloaded the Betty Boop cartoon Minnie the Moocher and, lo and behold, enjoyed it. I've got a bunch of others waiting to be watched now, and of the 3 or 4 others I've seen, I have to say that the earlier ones are significantly better than the later ones. There's probably an obsessive internet writeup somewhere, but I haven't gone looking yet. Minnie the Moocher is well worth downloading, though. A huge painted backdrop, lots of very freaky ghosts and things chasing Betty and Bimbo (...ever want definitive proof that the meaning of the word "bimbo" has changed significantly since the 30's? Here you go.) through a cave, and Cab Calloway. What more could you ask for?

the last one we watched (the one from 37, with grampy in it) was, i thought, as good as the ones from '33, but in a totally different way. but the 35-36 ones were... poor.

Yeah, I was going to go back and label the filenames by year so I can keep track, and perhaps burn them to CD...

If you manage to burn them, I think I'd like a copy.

Must... stop... procrastinating. I hate cleaning my desk.

I assume it had sound when you watched it? I'm not getting any sound from it, though other applications on my system are still as noisy as ever. This is going to drive me nuts...

Yeah, it did, but it was very very quiet.
