It is seldom that the finishing of the reading of a book or series of books brings such a sense of satisfaction as I feel today, having within the last ten minutes read through to the end of The System Of The World, the conclusion of which is the culmination of several years and several thousand pages.
I found it more readable than Quicksilver, but that may be simply that I have become more accustomed to the content and to the style in which said content is presented. I found it more engaging than The Confusion, but less of a rollicking travelogue of distant points of the globe and the divers and mysterious customs practiced thereabouts. I am tempted to go back and reread Quicksilver, in order to see whether my developing comprehension has rendered it more immediately accessible, but I feel a great need for something less rich to cleanse my mental palate-- a light sorbet course, as it were, before the next dense and flavorful literary delicacy I will devour.
But first, sleep.
