week off, yes indeed.
Jan. 18th, 2005 10:42 pmI am taking next week off. Yes, indeed.
The last two weeks have sucked and have, in general, kicked my ass up and down the street in a variety of painful ways.
First, got back from Oregon. Then the dreaded and inevitable airplane flu hit me. Sick for three days. Friday, I was back. Saturday was to be the mail server upgrade. Of course, I had a few days fewer to plan for it than originalally planned. It went smoothly, though, Saturday at 10:00pmish through Sunday morning at 5:00amish, except for the part where WPI was DoSsed and everything stopped working. So, I cancelled, backed out, and got a good four or five hours of annoyed sleep.
The next weeked, I tried it again. (This would be the 15th, for those playign along at home.) Went okay, seemed to be working, minor problems but generally functional, so at about 5:30am I sent out mail saying "Generally working, getting tired and careless, crashing now." 10:00 or so in the morning, Al calls and says, "Uh, broken?" So it was fixing time again, taking up most of Sunday, on four hours or so of sleep. Done in time for dinner, more or less.
Monday, more fighting of fires and discovery of overlooked things.
Today, smaller fires, but more of them. Discovery of major oversight. Very fast scripting of large-scale fixes for major oversights. Everything seemed okay by noonish, anyway, so I went to lunch and came back for an afternoon of semi-relaxed observation and poking-around. Around 4:00, mail stopped delivering, processes sat and hung, much bad, no mail, freaky freaky, cyrus shat bed, RAID controller did something dumb, I got to fix it over the course of roughly three more hours.
Got home, 7:30. Started making cheese. (Cheese being made.)
Somewhere in the meeting yesterday, Al said, "So, you're taking a couple of days off once this is all settled down, right? I hope so." So I figured I might as well ask for a week. "How about all next week?" I asked. "Well, if you think it works out that way," he said. "I've got two Saturday overnights and a Sunday," I said. "Oh right," he said,"I forgot about last weekend." So, yeah. All next week.
Planned:
- fix fake Les Paul. This will require nasty screw removal and then patching of screw-hole. (In headstock, where screw holding one of the tuners broke off. I didn't break it.) Also perhaps minor refinishing of screw-hold scarring, probably replacement of tuners, and replacement of broken pickup selector switch.
- fix Optigan. I have the service manual and a large clear living-room floor. It'll be an afternoon of dismantling.
- make more cheese. I have a giant jug of rennet and a huge sack of fancy-pants cheese salt on the way, and Price Chopper has gallons of milk right across the street. Cheese will be made.
- reading. Finish The System of the World. Probably read Going Postal and some other stuff. Lots of reading.
- games. Uru: Ages of Myst. Very pretty. I want a relto too!
- sleeping. Maybe I'll get a full nights' sleep for the first time since returning to the east coast.
- guitarin'. Practice practice practice.
- not answering the phone. Probably wishful thinking.
- not reading email. Definitely wishful thinking.
And that's it.
And now, I go to pour my curds into the cheese press and apply mighty pressure.

Date: 2005-01-19 01:21 pm (UTC)The first one picks up very rapidly after about the, uh, first third. Once you get to Jack roaming the world doing things, it starts rollicking.
The second is more rollicky overall, and the third is more engaging than the first.

It is best remembered today for its reputation of frequent failure and its kitschy appearance and sound.
Hahaha, poor optigan :(
