man, I have a copy of reason now, and no idea how to use it. Is it a sequencing program or what?

Yeah, sequencing and software synthesis in one big package. The big advantage is that it saves your entire setup along with the sequence, so you don't have to mess around with MIDI stuff and note down all your patches and effects setups and so on every time you want to work on a given song-- it's all encapsulated in the document, which opens up with the rack set up the way you left it when you saved it.
