Here's a CD I made but haven't actually burned. It makes a good playlist:

  • "Too Young" - Phoenix
  • "The Prisoner" - Howard Jones
  • "Like A Motorway" - Saint Etienne
  • "Always Crashing in the Same Car" (live, from Bowie at the Beeb)- David Bowie
  • "Dying on the Vine" (live, from Fragments of a Rainy Season) - John Cale
  • "Space Guy Blues" - Barcelona
  • "Complex" - Gary Numan
  • "Conversation Piece" - David Bowie
  • "King's Cross" - Pet Shop Boys
  • "Dream Operator" - Talking Heads
  • "Airwaves" - Thomas Dolby
  • "Under The Milky Way" - The Church
  • "Voices" - Intermix

Mm, yes. Good for feeling vague and moody.

Be in my broadcast when this is over.
Give me your shoulder, I need a place
To wait for morning.
No it was nothing - some car backfiring -
Please don't ask questions.
I itch all over.
Let me sleep.

Through the airwaves -
People never read the airwaves
Do we only feed the airwaves
Or stamp them out at street level?
Airwaves - the dampness of the wind
The airwaves - the tension of the skin
The airwaves
I really should have seen through the airwaves...

Maybe it's that time of year again. I poked Elessar yesterday, but he hasn't responded yet.

Ugh, I hate "Too Young". Well, I don't hate it, but I really don't like it, even after listening to it numerous times.

Kudos on including Barcelona, though.

"Too Young" has a particular early-80's vibe-- it fits in pretty well with a bunch of the rest of what's on that list...

Barcelona, well, I have mixed feelings about them. When they're good, they're really good-- "Space Guy Blues," and really most of Simon Basic are quite good. (And "I Know What You Think About Me" is about as close to New Order as you can get without Barney Sumner showing up to poke you with a long pointy stick.) The other two albums are much weaker, but I could listen to "1/2" anytime...

"the Prisoner" -- I haven't listened to that album in far too long. "Dream Operator" is wonderful-- it was my looping soundtrack to decompression my first year teaching. "King's Cross" makes me thing of my train trips in foreign lands; I think I had that album with me running the rails down to Hamburg that summer.

All of those, or the ablums they are on, are so specifically evocative for me. It's strange how music is like that.

Yeah, a lot of Pet Shop Boys is tied back into that summer for me, too. "Dream Operator" is mostly hooked into driving around with my father the summer before I left for Worcester, since we had two or three tapes in the truck and the True Stories soundtrack was one of them. All of those get me in very particular ways, though, and they're more or less lined up with one another, at least in feel, although not necessarily in time or specific events....
