Veteran BBC broadcaster John Peel has died at the age of 65, while on holiday in Peru.

Man. That's a huge mass of history gone there. Many times I've picked up an unfamiliar CD by a favorite artist and been delighted to find it full of Peel Sessions. Name a favorite band of the past 20 years and chances are he recorded them, and coaxed mighty performances from great musicians.

He'll certainly be missed. The music world is much the poorer for losing John Peel.

Well, shit, that came out of nowhere. What a tragedy.

He was survived by his wife, Emma.

"The service he provided was getting to hear music that you couldn't buy in Cardiff."

What more can you say, really? I've gathered the impression over the years that Wales is to Britain as Maine is to the USA - I take "music that you couldn't buy in Cardiff" to mean "pretty much bloody everything" - so I identify quite a lot with that statement. If I'm reading it right, it tells me everything I need to know about Peel's importance to British music fans...
