After careful finger watching, I have determined the basis of many of the songs that Mister Darnielle is playing on the current tour.

Basics:
D: x00232

G: 320033

A: x02220

   X=====

Asus4: x02230

Play by leaving the 3 finger in the same place most of the time and moving the 1 and 2 fingers back and forth across the strings, dropping the 4 finger on the 3rd fret for the G or on the 4th or 5th fret over the D for little melody lines.

"Weekend in Western Illinois":

D G
And we love these dogs
D G
That roll in the lawns here in Galesburg
D Asus D
Because they seem to know something nobody else knows

...and go from there. There are a couple of other chords in the chorus, but they're all based around the same place, and around A and D. The verse is actually very similar.

D G
The land's opening up like a blanket
D G
and the dandelions spread themselves thickly out
D Asus D
along the fields, which are evidently endless

...and so on. (Actually, I don't have a guitar with me right now, but I'm pretty sure that's the Asus4 and not the actual A. Should be the sus4, though.) (He didn't play this, but that's what I was figuring out when I noticed this.)

This is more or less the same progression as "Distant Stations."

This also works, with a couple of variations, for "Your Belgian Things," which starts off with the pinky up above D on the top string. Move your first and second fingers across the strings on the second fret as you go (listen to the song for the changes), and you've got most of the verse. Slide from the Asus4 into the A and you get this:

   D Asus4 A
...my camera groans beneath the weight it bears.

Other tabs or pieces or even somebody rounding these out would be welcome. I'm sure I'll play with them some more, but this is probably enough for now...
