TiBook/AlBook comparison
Sep. 27th, 2004 10:12 amWulp, a few days with the new powerbook, and a few differences are becoming obvious.
The keyboard is slightly bigger, and the keys start off smoother than I really find comfortable. I'll probably just get used to this.
The touchpad is also a little smoother, it seems, or at least lower-friction than my thoroughly-worn old touchpad. The button stands up more out of the case and is clickier.
The screen is MUCH brighter. At half-bright, it's as bright as my old laptop turned all the way up. Some of that is the age of the old one and how much it's been used. Some of that is just that it's a more modern LCD.
The case is more flexible-- the screen especially so. In fact, the screen is slightly curved upward when closed. It's a little disconcerting. I expect that after being stuck in a case and carried around for a while it'll settle down a bit.
The lack of gaps between the function keys (f5 and f6 especially) means I can't as easily find the volume keys by feel. Minor annoyance.
The ports are all on the side. Also a minor annoyance.
It's much faster, though. Oh boy, much faster. The wireless is MUCH better than TiBook wireless. Things are generally zippier. I haven't really beaten on the graphics chip yet, but I expect it'll be noticably better than the TiBook graphics.
I'm certainly not feeling any buyer's remorse here, anyway. 8)
I also entirely expect new powerbooks to be announced this week or next. Ideally, they will appear the day after the easy-no-questions-asked-return date... Not sure if I'd actually return it or not if something better appears in the next week or so for the same price, but I'd certainly think about it.

I also like that when you aren't using the ports on the TiBook they get covered by the little door. I'm going to be all nervous about getting stuff jammed into this one...
It's also a minor annoyance that the whole thing is juuuuuuuuust slightly larger then the TiBook was, since it means that my handy Timbuk2 slipcase no longer fits. :/

Date: 2004-09-27 12:07 pm (UTC)The uncovered ports on the side have not been an issue for me in the six months I've had it. Nothing there to be nervous about unless you're in the habit of jamming your notebook into a bag of pencil shavings and metal filings or something :).
I'm holding out for a resolution bump on the 12" Powerbooks. Get those up to 1280x1024 without changing the size and I am so very, very there.
