My hands smell of gasoline and oil; I am enjoying an evenign meal of port and stilton.

While gasoline and oil would tend to enhance the stilton, doesn't it detract from the port? Actually, I take that back -- I've had a couple ports that would be enhanced by a drop of petrol.

In this case, I got my hands clean enough that neither were effected.

It was not, however, my favorite port. It was a Taylor-Fladgate LBV, um, 1995, I think. Whatever's in the stores right now. I really prefer (for easy-to-find port) Warre's 1992 LBV.

This one wasn't bad, but wasn't "Oh WOW" amazing, either. I certainly wouldn't turn it down. 8)

I think [livejournal.com profile] jehanna and I are sorting out our port tastes-- I like 'em sweet and syrupy, and she likes them drier.

What do you think of port-like wine from California, say?

Hmm. I enjoyed Fellom's `98 Zinfandel port (gotta love the blurb), as well as Page Mill Winery's `96 Lewis Port (91% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc). I also had an Australian Show Tokay, which i think was like a tawny port, but i liked that one, and i've never liked a tawny port. I am not a port connosieur, though; not even a dilettante, i'd say.

While I haven't tried them yet, Andrew Quady makes port-like wines in California. They're rather unfortunately called "Starboard". I have tried his Vya vermouths, and I'm quite impressed. While most vermouth producers use nasty wine leftovers, Vya is made with decent quality wine, and it really shows in the final product. Of course, it ought to in vermouths that cost nearly $20/bottle. I haven't seen them at Austin, but I haven't asked the staff. I forgot to look when I was at Julios in Westborough.
