I convinced a friend (who I know will buy the CD if he likes something) to listen to My Bloody Valentine. He's got Loveless on now. I get this email:

hey, neat. MBV has started, and sounds really good. it's kinda like Band
of Susans, as the obvious accent is on the music and not the vocal mix.
i'll dig up a lyric sheet. one thing that i'm not hearing any of so far
(though it's only the first song) is bass drum, nor much tom. there's
bass during the heavier sections, but it's not prominent. is this the mix
of the album or just the way it was ripped? if the latter, can it be
ripped again with normal levels? (i sense it was the rip as i'm picking
up some notable noise on the second track that doesn't sound like it would
be on the CD.) still, i like it a lot. :)

I let him know that, no, that's how the CD sounds.

And, heh. Lyric sheet. Hee hee.

I saw Lost in Translation twice this weekend... excellent soundtrack, and it even has "Sometimes" from Loveless.

And excuse me, maybe this is just because I'm a drummer who's listened to MBV too much, but--how do you not hear the bass drum and toms?? Especially the first track; the drums (bass and snare) are the major propelling element that keep Shield's blow-you-out-of-your-chair chords from falling apart (my favorite section of "Only Shallow" is the one where the bvvooom-voom-voom chorus completely loses sync for just a measure).
